A little girl is glad that spring has come, and outlines the activities that she and her family participate in. She goes outside to run around, looking at the bees and flowers, and saying hello to the graoundhog. She helps her mother plant seeds, and sweeps and shines with her father. The family goes on a bike ride (wearing helmets!), and comes home when it starts to rain. Afterwards, there are puddles to splash in and a beautiful ranibow.
Good Points
The colors in this book are perfect for spring, starting with the 1960s inspired geometric end papers! There's plenty of pale teal grass, yellow sun and flowers, and touches of blue. The simple shapes highlight these colors, and make it easy to point out the objects that two pages at the end of the book suggest finding. There is a snail on every page, and I enjoyed following the exploits of the little dog as he steals a glove, talks to a worm, and splashes in a puddle. This illustrator also worked on the short book for very young children, Indestructibles: Let's Go Outside!
There is only about one sentence on each page, which is the perfect length for young readers. Because there are so few words, the font could have been a little bigger, but the san serif text is easy enough to read.
This is the first book in the series of seasonal tales, and I may have to take a look at the autumn title, because that is my favorite season, and I imagine the colors will be very pretty! Learning about the seasons is definitely a big part of the preschool curriculum, so this is a great title to have along with Little Blue Truck’s Springtime by Alice Schertle, When Spring Comes, by Kevin Henkes, and Firsts & Lasts: The Changing Seasons by Leda Schubert.
