Maxine has a favorite tree--the tallest and widest Sitka tree in the whole Walbran Valley. It's her favorite because it calls to her, but everyone knows trees don't talk.
Maxine and her family are in the old-growth forest to clear fallen trees from the trail when they meet a researcher who is studying the marbled murrelet, and endangered seabird. Maxine learns that the tree calls to her for a special reason--a reason so big the loggers will not be able to cut her tree down.
An entertaining story sure to make kids think about our natural resources. This would make a great addition to science units related to endangered species or ecosystems.
