The Author’s note helped tremendously in understanding that this story embraces the time period between 1948-1971 when many Caribbean families moved to Europe and became known as the Windrush generation. Rereading it in that context helps to see the author is showing the hopes and fears of a child undertaking the journey and adjusting to life in Europe. The illustrations are whimsical and the color palette is bold and reminiscent of the Caribbean. This is a great way to learn about an aspect of history that might be unfamiliar to some and to imagine what that would have been like.
