In five warm and cozy tales, children can delight in the world of Piglet, his family, and his friends—while learning five fun and easy ways to write a poem.

When Piglet picks up a stone and drops it into a puddle, words seem to splash out: wet, fresh, earthy, sploshing, sunshiny, puddle. Is Piglet a poet? Each of five charming stories captures a warm snapshot into some happy moment in childhood while demonstrating how to create a different kind of poem: a puddle poem, a comparing poem, a making-a-person-out-of-something poem, an if-I-was poem, and an I-would-give-you poem. With plenty of tips and tricks after each story and fresh illustrations by Sam Usher, author Sean Taylor makes poetry writing accessible, inspiring even the youngest of children to find their voice and call themselves poets.

A picture book geared towards ages 3 and up, YOU’RE A POET, follows Piglet on five adventures where he creates poems. These five little stories are followed by an explanation of the poem Piglet created during that story, as well as hints and tips to encourage your young writers to write a similar poem.

What I Loved:
The poem activities were written and showcased very well. They provide a step-by-step breakdown of Piglet’s poem and how writers can create their own poem of that type. There are 5 different types of poems introduced in this book and each of them have an activity page. They provide some starters for kids who may be struggling with coming up with their own ideas.

The writing secrets provide an additional layer to the activities. These pages provide a bit more information about what helps good poems stand out from unengaging poems.

Piglet’s stories and poems are really fun and cute. They aren’t long, maybe about 10 pages each, but they are long enough to provide a basic setup to Piglet’s poems. It works to show children where inspiration for a poem can come from. They can see Piglet taking in his surroundings and feelings and using it to craft his poems.

What Left Me Wanting More:
The wording may at times be a bit confusing for children. It depends on the reading level, of course, but I was unsure what age range this book was intended for when first reading it.

Final Verdict:
YOU’RE A POET is a cute, simple story that will hopefully encourage young readers to write poems. The illustrations are clean and engaging, full of wonderful colors and characters. The stories are soothing and effective at showing off Piglet’s newest poem. The hints and tips are fantastic and the author clearly put a lot of effort into making sure children would understand the poems.

A picture book with cute stories and fantastic activities, YOU’RE A POET is sure to bring out the creative side of children.
