In this large format, beautifully illustrated inspirational book, there are quotes from fifty prominent Black women from a wide range of professions and time periods. Each two page spread has a large, brilliantly colored illustration of a woman, her name, years, and areas of contribution as well as a quotation from her, and a brief explanation of context. The lettering is in fantastic, serif Moderno font, and there are plenty of bright neo-Art Deco page decorations.
Good Points
From young, modern contributors like Lizzo, Yara Shahidi (whose picture is on the cover), and Amandla Stenberg to slightly older women like Whoppi Goldberg and Dr. Mae Jemison to influential historical figures like Zora Neal Hurston, Angela Davis and Josephine Baker, the collection is heavy on artists (singers, actors, and writers) but does include some scientists and innovators. Young readers will appreciate seeing people with whom they are familiar but who might not often appear in traditional collective biographies.

More like Raia's Epic Mentor Guide than Wilson's Young, Gifted and Black, this is a great book to have to inspire young readers to accomplish great things. The quotations are on a variety of topics, and if this weren't in hard cover, it would definitely be a top choice for my favorite thing to do with these heavily illustrated collections-- buy two copies so that one can be cut up for bulletin boards! Hand this to fans of LaBarge's Rad Women A to Z and Harrison's Little Legends.

I was a bit surprised that Amanda Gorman didn't make it into this collection. I wish there had been more scientists and politicians; it was very heavy on entertainers whose impact has not yet been fully realized.
