A picture book that celebrates doing your own thing in the face of society's expectations . . . and a sweet story about a girl, her dad, her disapproving grandma and, most importantly, cars.

Sarabeth loves cars.

She loves the way the engines sometimes roar like lions and other times purr like kittens. She loves seeing sports cars that are sleek and fast like cheetahs and boxy SUVs that trundle along like elephants.

And most of all, she loves to help her dad at his garage.

Sarabeth’s grandmother doesn’t approve. She thinks little girls should play with dolls and wear dresses and always have clean hands. But when her car starts grumbling like a walrus instead of purring like a kitten, who will be there to help?

A delightful story about an independent and spirited girl who has no time for the limitations that society wants to put on her, and a grandma who gets the opportunity to change her way of thinking.

SARABETH’S GARAGE is a cute story about Sarabeth, a young girl who loves cars. She even helps her dad at his garage. Sarabeth loves what she does, but she doesn’t love the comments her disapproving grandmother makes. When her grandmother’s car starts making a strange noise, will Sarabeth be able to help?

Sarabeth’s strength and perseverance in this book is remarkable and a great lesson for kids. Her grandmother isn’t outright mean to Sarabeth, but she makes a lot of comments that hurt Sarabeth’s feelings. But Sarabeth doesn’t give in to these feelings or give up working on cars. She focuses on what she loves, on the memories she’s made in this garage with her dad and the other workers. It’s a testament to her strength and perseverance and a message that I hope parents encourage in their kids.

The art in this book matches the tone and theme of it so well. It’s simple art with rough, unsteady lines that mimic that of a kid’s drawing. And this is not a negative thing; it fits this book so well. It captures the dirty and rough work of working on cars. The characters all look distinct from each other, given little details that set them apart.

The story is smooth and straight forward. Sarabeth loves cars and working in the garage, her grandmother doesn’t approve of these things. There are multiple little scenes that show different things Sarabeth loves and the comments that her grandmother makes. It sets up the situation with her grandmother’s car well and shows Sarabeth’s ability to fix the problem. Nothing too detailed, just enough to give readers some background info. It works really well as a picture book.

SARABETH’S GARAGE is a charming picture book about a girl who loves cars and her strength in the face of societal expectations. Sarabeth is a charming character with perseverance and grace who chooses to solve the problem when her disapproving grandmother’s car starts making strange noises.
