All different kinds of families visit the animals in the Central Park Zoo. This true story, written by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell and illustrated by Henry Cole, tells the tale of a different kind of animal family, which formed at the zoo.

When the penguins began pairing off, one pair consisted of two males, Roy and Silo. They did everything together: sang and swam and walked. They even made themselves a home--a stone nest.

One day, Roy and Silo noticed that the other penguin couples were raising baby penguins from eggs the mother penguins laid. So Roy and Silo tried to hatch something that looked like an egg, but it didn't hatch--even though they sat and sat and sat on it-- because it was a rock. But one day, the penguin keeper found an egg that needed a home. He put it in Roy and Silo's nest. Roy and Silo kept that egg warm for over a month. Then, one day, their egg hatched and they became the proud fathers of a baby penguin named Tango.

This story, celebrating how different loving families can be, is charming, amazing, humorous-- and utterly heartwarming!

When I learned And Tango Makes Three was the most challenged book of 2007 I went right to the shelves to see what the fuss was all about. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a sweet story about the power of love and family, where I had expected to find a book with at least a naughty word inside.

As a youth services librarian, I try to bring across a sense of fairness and tolerance in every story time I do. This book makes my job easy and fun at the same time. And Tango Makes Three, tells the story of Roy and Silo, two chinstrap penguins who meet one mating season and fall in love.

Their attempts to hatch an egg of their own fall short until an understanding zookeeper gives them a real egg to hatch and their daughter Tango is born. The bright illustrations and easy text give this true story a fairy tale like feel while making the theme of family very clear.

Five out of Five stars!
