When I learned And Tango Makes Three was the most challenged book of 2007 I went right to the shelves to see what the fuss was all about. Imagine my surprise when I discovered a sweet story about the power of love and family, where I had expected to find a book with at least a naughty word inside.

As a youth services librarian, I try to bring across a sense of fairness and tolerance in every story time I do. This book makes my job easy and fun at the same time. And Tango Makes Three, tells the story of Roy and Silo, two chinstrap penguins who meet one mating season and fall in love.

Their attempts to hatch an egg of their own fall short until an understanding zookeeper gives them a real egg to hatch and their daughter Tango is born. The bright illustrations and easy text give this true story a fairy tale like feel while making the theme of family very clear.

Five out of Five stars!
