Their daring rescue mission goes awry when the team discovers that the pugs have united with Evil Screenius and Kittywonkus—villains from the crew's past bent on destruction. BLAST FROM THE PAST is an entertaining sci-fi graphic novel adventure, great for independent readers! Astrid and Stella notice that something seems to be wrong with Bobo, their robot - he has a virus! Before they are able to fix things, their ship is invaded by Pugnacious D and his crew, a group of evil pugs, who eat their snacks, have a dance break, and then capture them. Luckily, Bobo is able to get rid of the virus and starts a rescue mission to get Astrid and Stella back, freeing the rest of the captives as well.

What I loved: This is a great graphic novel for early independent readers. The font is large with limited text on each page. There are no more than four panels on each page, so the pace moves as quickly as readers would like. The text is complimented by colorful, detailed illustrations that bring the silliness and humor to each page. While the plot could sound a little scary, it is so silly and full of humor that it maintains a light tone throughout.

The villains are not at all scary and also full of humor, with strong messages of lessons learned and friendship throughout. Children will enjoy the fun and silliness of the story along with the delightful main characters and their robot. The story ends well with plenty of joy and humor, focusing on friendship and forgiveness.

Final verdict: BLAST FROM THE PAST is a charming graphic novel that is perfect for early independent readers will plenty of silliness, action/adventure, and solid themes of friendship. Highly recommend for young elementary school readers and fans of NARWHAL AND JELLY, PENCIL AND ERASER, and SIMON AND CHESTER.
