A stylish, current, and perfectly young Diasporic celebration of Jews around the world!

This modern and whimsical Jewish-themed series is the first of its kind to incorporate both Jewish traditions and Jewish culture, offering a truly representative and current depiction of Judaism. How Do You Jew? introduces readers to Jewish traditions from around the world, validating the varied experiences of Jewish readers and celebrating the global Jewish community.

Author and artist Suzy Ultman melds her own Jewish upbringing with her current trendsetting aesthetic to create a much-needed series of gorgeous, appealing, and deceptively simple books that will stand out on any table or shelf amidst the sea of blue and gold painterly Jewish-themed books that precede these.

How Do You Jew? Is a colorful board book celebrating the Jewish diaspora. On each page is a tradition that may be unique to a certain country, but explaining that it is still a Jewish tradition. I like that this book states where in the world these traditions are celebrated to see the wide scope of places that have people of the Jewish faith. The illustrations are bright and colorful and isolated on the detail discussed, making it easy for the youngest of readers to focus on the subject. This book is a great vocabulary builder for items associated with Jewish traditions. Overall, this book showcases a multicultural influence of the Jewish faith that is easy to understand, engaging, and educational for all.

“How Do You Jew?” by Suzy Ultman is a celebration of Jews around the world. The book encourages readers to understand that there are so many different ways in which to be Jewish. From eating challah on Shabbat to dancing to klezmer music, singing “Dayenu” on Passover, lighting an oil menorah on Chanukah, and making anywhere feel like home, Jews can feel their pride anywhere and everywhere.

The book doesn’t just focus on Jews in Israel or America, but makes mention of Jews from Australia, Ethiopia, Morocco, Poland, South Africa, India, and more. The illustrations are sweet and easily accessible for young readers, culminating with a final page that asks, “How do you Jew?” This allows readers to think about their own ways of being Jewish and how to possibly incorporate new traditions into their observance.
