Little Bill intends to ride down to the pool to meet a friend, and then return home in time for the early dinner his mother has planned. But instead, he sees his friends playing basketball and joins them when they ask for his help. Three hours later, he realizes he's very late coming home, and when he arrives home and everyone was worried, he lies about where he was and pretends to have been nearly kidnapped. His parents send him to his room to recopy the Boy Who Cried Wolf story so he can learn that lying is wrong.

I really love the Little Bill book series. The family is loving and close, Little Bill does things every young boy does, and the life lessons learned are important and authentic. I wish this book had pushed just a little further by having Little Bill understand how dangerous his lie truly was, and how dangerous it was to have stayed out so late without anyone knowing where he was. But that is ground that can be covered between a parent and child while reading together.
