The Lucky Day is the third book in the Seashell Key series by Lourdes Heuer aimed at emerging readers. The book is broken down into four acts with a different character being the focus of each act. Each act contains three chapters, with chapters being two to three pages—an ideal length for building reading confidence.

The book focuses on the inhabitants of a seaside island. In the book Lucky Day, the acts follow students at school on the first day of Spring. First, we meet Matteo who wants to catch a leprechaun and with the help of his teacher builds a trap. Next, Sasha and Sophia take their science class outside to help with the garden. Elena and her classmates embark on an exciting map-following adventure, and finally, the entire class comes together for a creative hat-making project.

What I Liked: The short chapters are a standout feature, making The Lucky Day an excellent choice for young readers transitioning to longer books. Heuer uses some repetitious words/phrases throughout the chapter which will help build stronger more confident readers. Despite their brevity, the stories are sweet and charming, offering simple, easy-to-follow storylines that keep young readers engaged without overwhelming them.

Adding to the book's appeal are the vibrant, full-color illustrations on every page, which will keep readers engaged in the story. Illustrator Lynnor Bontiago deserves kudos for creating a diverse cast of characters, ensuring that a wide range of readers can see themselves represented within the story. As a bonus, the character key on the first page provides a helpful introduction to the inhabitants readers will encounter on Seashell Key.

Overall, Seashell Key -The Lucky Day is a charming read that will be a wonderful addition to any young reader's bookshelf.
