With an itinerary from the Get Lost Travel Agency, Grandfather and Roo (a dog) set off from England to America on an exciting quest to discover Roos grandfather, rumored to be living among cowboys following a successful movie career. They repeatedly get lost, naturally, and they discover that America is a very large country.

Equipped with a golf cart full of equipment, they fly from England to Hollywood, hitchhike to the Grand Canyon, camp out with a duck, and search for the whereabouts of Roos grandfather. They also get into a lot of trouble because Roo is a mischievous and talented dog. Grandfather is sometimes exasperated and often proud of his traveling companion as they use their wits to battle their way through bewildering encounters with a bus full of greyhounds (when they thought they were getting on a Greyhound Bus), a duck, a gang of lawless horses who elect Roo sheriff of their town, and a skunk!

The story is told through a series of funny, affectionate letters from Grandfather to his grandchild back home and illustrated with delightful pen-and-ink drawings. The Last Cowboys was written and illustrated by Harry Horse, a man who had the perfect name for a book like this.

The adventures of Grandfather and Roo are often hilarious. Grandfather confidently asks, What can possibly go wrong? and the answer is nearly everything, with many twists and turns and lots of fun along the way!
