In The Lost Feather, a Native American boy, whose very special feather is lost to the wind, begins a search not only for the feather, but for the bravery which he fears he has lost with it. His journey, assisted by his animal friends, comes to an abrupt halt when an enemy invades his village and, with the fate of the village in his hands, he must think fast. His adventure leads him to a surprising self-discovery, reminding him that the memory of his father will guide him forever. Although the young brave s animal friends are personified in the spirit of Native American folklore, the story is the author s own creation. The warm illustrations will send the reader s imagination rolling along with the tumbleweed through the western canyons and along sandy paths.

Eyes-of-a-Hawk is a very special 12-year-old brave. After saving the village from an enemy attack, Eyes-of-a-Hawk was blessed with two feathers for his headband by his father. Now, many years later, his father has died, and his two beautiful feathers are Eyes-of-a-Hawks only reminder of his father.

When the wind suddenly snatches away one of the feathers during a windstorm, Eyes-of-a-Hawk is convinced that the village will no longer think he is brave. Even worse, his fathers spirit will be ashamed of the loss and his son. Helped by his mother and animal friends along the way, Eyes-of-a-Hawk learns an important lesson about self-worth.

A quick and vibrant read for children, this story will transport readers back to the American West. Filled with colorful and unique illustrations, and with a great message, this is a great first work from the author (whos a chemist-turned-writer!). Recommended for ages 6 and up.

Reader reviewed by Mrs. D

This book comes to life in the classroom, especially during Thanksgiving preparation. I ran  an easy interactive activity during the telling of the story. My first graders each selected a colorful feather (available at craft shops) from a basket that was passed around and held onto it for almost the entire storytelling. Before the surprise ending, each child contributed his or her feather back into the basket, and felt like they were part of the story of friendship with the protagonist, Eyes-of-a-Hawk. We celebrated our own little Thanksgiving afterwards with corn muffins and juice.
