Elegant and insightful, THE SCARECROW follows a lonely scarecrow through the seasons- no one dares to approach him. That is, until, one day, a baby crow falls near the scarecrow. The scarecrow bends to pick up the baby crow and takes care of it until it can fly away. The scarecrow is alone again through the seasons, until the crow returns to make its nest with the scarecrow.
Written as a lovely poem accompanied by soft, lush illustrations, this picture book can easily convey so much emotion and beauty. While the plot is simple, the poetry and images make it so much more. This is ultimately a tale of unlikely friendships, love, and nurturing care.
What I loved: This story is so gorgeously written and illustrated that it will be appreciated by readers old and young. The poetic/lyrical writing has broad appeal when read aloud, and the text-to-picture ratio is great for young readers- toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary schoolers alike. This is a lush and lovely story that will touch the reader’s heart and make sure they never look at a scarecrow the same way again.
Final verdict: Beautiful and lyrical, THE SCARECROW is a simple but elegant story of love, perfect for the fall. Highly recommend for anyone who wants a unique and heartwarming book to share with their young readers.
