An unsuspecting Gilbert the Goblin finds himself in the crosshairs of cupids and their heart-tipped arrows in the hilarious latest installment in The Worst! picture book series, where even the strangest of creatures can become the best of friends.

Who needs valentines? Not Gilbert the goblin! There’s no time for cards and hugs and all that mushy malarky with far more important matters at hand—like, uh…eating tacos. When Gilbert bumps into a squad of cupids bent on showering him with love arrows, he runs for his life!

This is clearly proof that valentines are the worst! Can Gilbert avoid the trappings of the holiday or will love find a way?

VALENTINES ARE THE WORST! is a delightful new adventure for Gilbert the Goblin, as he learns about love and friendship. Gilbert hates Valentine's Day - and also the cupids with perfect hair who support the holiday. When they chase him with their love arrows, he nearly escapes. Accidentally pricked by one of his cacti, Gilbert thinks a love arrow got him - and celebrates the holiday with all his friends.

What I loved: Like the others in the series, this one does a great job of telling the story from Gilbert's perspective, giving extra context and personality to his story. A lot happens in the illustrations, and they are fabulously drawn and colored with lots of emotion and silliness. Readers are easily drawn into his world and his general misery.

However, the plot takes this to an even funnier place, where he thinks he has been pricked by a love arrow, but the reader knows that he was not. He finds that he does love spending the holiday with his friends (from past books) and his sock slugs, even after the love spell has worn off. With readers getting extra information and insight, they will feel like they are in on the secret and see the humor in the juxtaposition.

What left me wanting more: As a small thing, unlike in the other books, Gilbert does not have an epiphany, learning about his mistake or that he actually does like this thing. While the reader realizes that he does love on his own, the lack of his own epiphany felt like it was missing from the end.

Final verdict: VALENTINES ARE THE WORST! is a comical and delightful story about Valentine's day that is sure to charm young readers. Highly recommend picking this one (and the whole series) up!

Valentine’s Are the Worst is another grumpily adorable addition to THE WORST series. Gilbert the Goblin does not like Valentine’s Day or Cupids until he thinks he is hit by an arrow and tells us what he really loves. The illustrations add so much value to the text as the reader is let in on the joke of what poked Gilbert in the backside. I enjoyed the attention to detail in the illustrations, as we see cameos of mythical creatures from earlier books in the series. The inside covers have Valentine’s Day cards from his friends, as well as anti-conversational heart sayings, which were so much fun to pore over. Can we convince a candy company to make grumpy conversational hearts? I think there is a real prospect of a hit with that idea. Every aspect of this book is so much fun and sure to delight readers as a new holiday favorite.

Valentines Are the Worst is a funny, slightly chaotic picture book that follows Gilbert the Goblin, who absolutely refuses to get into anything related to Valentine’s Day. He’s not interested in cards, hugs, or anything remotely sweet, he’d rather be doing literally anything else, like eating tacos. But things take a turn when he runs into a group of overly cheerful cupids who are determined to spread love whether he likes it or not. From there, the story turns into Gilbert trying to escape while everything around him gets more ridiculous.

What I liked about this one is that it doesn’t try to be overly sweet about the holiday. Instead, it leans into the grumpy attitude, which makes it way funnier, especially for kids who don’t care about Valentine’s Day. When I read this with kids, they thought Gilbert’s reactions were the best part. They were laughing at how dramatic he was and pointing out things in the background that added to the joke. The illustrations really carry a lot of the humor, especially because the reader can sometimes see what’s actually happening before Gilbert does. My favorite part is when he starts going on about what he “loves” after thinking he’s been hit by an arrow, it’s unexpected and kind of flips his whole attitude in a funny way.

There are also a lot of small details that make it more fun the longer you look at it, like the little background moments and the extra touches in the front and back pages. It feels like a book kids can go back to and notice something new each time. If I had one small thing, it’s that the story is pretty simple, but honestly, the humor and visuals make up for it. Overall, it’s a silly, slightly sarcastic take on Valentine’s Day that kids really enjoy, especially the ones who aren’t into all the "mushy" stuff.
Good Points
- Funny, grumpy main character that kids love reacting to

- Visual jokes and small details that add extra humor

- Different take on Valentine’s Day that isn’t overly sweet or cheesy

Valentines Are the Worst! which is for anyone who pretends they hate Valentine’s Day but secretly just wants tacos and maybe one tiny arrow of affection. Gilbert the Goblin vs. aggressive cupids? Comedy gold. It’s the perfect reminder that even the grumpiest goblin can’t outrun love forever.
