This little board book hit me right in the feels! Hannah Eliot has perfectly captured the beautiful, exhausting, sometimes hilarious reality of motherhood in "What's Mine Is Yours." As I read it with my 12 month old daughter curled up next to me, I found myself laughing and tearing up along to every spread. Sally Walker's illustrations are warm and inviting, showing all the ways mothers share their lives—whether we planned to or not.
What I absolutely love about this book is how it celebrates the involuntary generosity of motherhood without any hint of martyrdom or complaint. Eliot acknowledges that everything becomes "ours" the moment we become moms—our food, our bed, our personal space, our hearts. The simple text beautifully captures how we share our laps during story time, our snacks (goodbye, uninterrupted meals!), and even our dreams as we watch our little ones grow. From a child development perspective, this book is genius because it helps children understand the depth of maternal love while validating their natural desire to be close to mom.
As someone who's currently sharing her morning quiet time, her favorite mug, and apparently her entire identity with two small humans, this book felt like a gentle reminder that this constant sharing isn't something to endure—it's something to treasure. My kids love their “mama time” and this book reminds me of that during tough moments. The book captures the paradox of motherhood where we simultaneously lose ourselves and find our deepest purpose.
