Bear loves fall, from the chill in the air to the tumble of the leaves, so he is very excited to go on a picnic with his friend Mouse. When Mouse doesn't come to his house at the appointed time, Bear isn't happy, and sets on to have a picnic on his own. When the wind up ends his basket, he worries that perhaps the tiny Mouse has been blown away. When he finds his friend, Mouse is sitting dejectedly on a stump and tells Bear that he is sad about the flowers and the sun having gone away. Bear tries to good naturedly find positives in the season, like how much fun maple helicopters are, and even pretends to have wings made out of branches, but Mouse is even sadder when it starts to rain. Deciding to go mope at home, Bear makes a dramatic exit... but slips in the mud. Mouse laughs, but Bear is not amused. After nice warm baths at home, followed by tea and pickles, the two settle down to be deeply sad by the fire, but seem to be enjoying themselves a tiny bit.
Good Points
Bear and Mouse's gloomy outlooks will be gently amusing to young readers, who will know that there is no reason to be QUITE as sad and grumpy as the two are. Even though the friends say they are sad, they do seem to be enjoying some of the delights of fall.

The pictures echo the fall weather, with blue and then gray skies, autumn shades of leaves, and even plenty of mud rendered in watercolor, ink, and gouache. It's hard to be too sad with such pretty backgrounds, but both Mouse and Bear certainly can pull grumpy faces!

If fall is your favorite season, it's always fun to see books set against the brilliant yellows and oranges of fall leaves. This long running series about friends Bear and Mouse will delight fans of picture book duos like Lobel's Frog and Toad, Willems' Elephant and Piggie, or Barclay's Sheep Dog and Sheep Sheep.
