‘Donkey Hodie In a Pickle!’ provides a glimpse into the new series of ‘Donkey Hodie’ available on PBS Kids. A Fred Rogers Production, ‘Donkey Hodie’ is a sweet and friendship-filled show, and this book captures the same themes.
The story is simple, but provides useful tools and values for young children and readers, such as working together for a common purpose, learning to deal with frustration, and working through emotions. While Donkey plays with her friend Panda, they enjoy Panda’s favorite toys, which so happen to be pickles that Panda believes look like different animals. Before long, they find that one of the pickles has gotten stuck between two rocks, and they attempt to rescue it.
The two are quite determined to solve the problem of saving the pickle, and they use different methods, such as a fishing rod and a plunger to help themselves out. While this is happening, they also sing a song about not giving up and turning their problem into a game.
The images are straight out of the TV show, encouraging readers to view the program as well. It is a story that promotes friendship, encouragement, determination, and a healthy dose of optimism.
