VIVO: ENCORE! is a picture book version of the highlights from the animated film. Told in quick and simple language, the book begins with Vivo performing with his best friend Andres in Cuba. Andres used to perform with Marta when he was younger, and she was the love of his life, but she moved to Miami, and he never got to tell her - however, he did write her a song. She had invited him to come sing with her now, but he died peacefully in his sleep before he could.
Thus, Vivo has set out with Gabi, his niece to deliver the love song to Marta. Their journey is marked by storms and a python named Lutador, but music gets them through.
What I loved: This is a picture book recap of the animated film that will appeal to children who want to enjoy the story of VIVO over again. The book includes brightly colored, full page illustrations throughout, showing the story again to young readers. Favorite characters are featured throughout, including Dancarino and the other girls from the Sand Dollar troop, with the book giving a basic summary of events along with a bit of dialogue. The book does manage to move quickly through content without making too many leaps.
I would add some caution for sensitive readers, as the book does mention Andres's death, passing away peacefully in his sleep, as well as danger from Lutador the python who plans to eat Vivo in the Everglades. However, fans of the film will recognize these moments.
Final verdict: A great accompaniment for the animated film, VIVO: ENCORE! recaps the major events in a digestable picture book format. Recommend for fans of the movie who want to hear Vivo's story again.
