What a refreshing take on Christmas stories! Wexler has created something that feels both seasonal and timeless. Everett's journey from "imperfect" tree to triumphant christmas tree challenges conventional ideas about worth and beauty in ways that young children can understand.
The story tackles some really important developmental concepts - self-acceptance, finding where you belong, and the idea that "different" doesn't mean "less than." My preschooler immediately connected with Everett's feelings of not fitting in, which sparked some beautiful conversations about how everyone has unique gifts to offer.
The illustrations are warm and inviting, with a cozy quality that perfectly captures the holiday spirit. The text has enough tree puns to keep my son and husband giggling through the whole story. My favorite element of the story was that in a time of great difficulty, in an airport full of stranded passengers, Everett made the decision to bring people together. I was a little reminder to use your unique gifts to bring some good into the world, especially when things don't look hopeful. The only critique I have of this book is that some adults may find it difficult to suspend their disbelief to imagine an airport full of stranded, angry passengers coming together and singing Christmas carols!
