Welcome to FlipFlap Board Books: Adventures to be read forwards, backwards, and side-to-side! For young kids learning their basics and exploring the world around them, this creatively formatted book (which can be read forwards AND backwards) teaches kids their colors with a cast of cute and colorful bugs.

A unique format, this board book has two spines—one on each side. Every other page attaches to the opposing spine so that the book opens outward left and right. As the the reader turns the pages (each die-cut in the shape of a leaf), a new colorful bug appears.

A bright red ladybug rests on a leaf.
An orange butterfly hangs beneath.
In the breeze, a pink mantis sways.
A white cabbage moth flutters and plays.

As the story goes on, kids learn their colors and are rewarded with a rainbow of bugs at the back of the book.

Colorful critters, a rainbow of friends! (Can you read it back again?)

Then, in order to closer the book correctly, the text must be read backwards while the bugs hide away again. With wonderfully layered design, illustration, and text that can be read forwards and backwards, there's a surprising amount to discover in this small but mighty board book that begs to be read multiple times.

NAME YOUR COLORS (AND CRITTERS, TOO!) is an engaging board book that introduces colors through bugs! The book has flap/pages on each side that alternate to open up, and then are read again to close the book.

What I loved: This is a fun introduction to colors for toddlers. The bugs are very fun and add up on leaves on the backside of each page to create a rainbow of bugs. The text features short phrases about the bug with an emphasis on color as each flap/page is opened. The book is designed to essentially be read twice at a time, going in and going out, which toddlers will love as they appreciate repetition.

The page/flaps are die-cut for the leaves on which all the bugs perch. This adds some extra fun, as well as the unique way of opening the book. I also appreciate that the flaps do not have ordered words/phrases, so they can essentially be read in any order in the case of chaotic readers who may open and close it in their own ways.

What left me wanting more: As a small thing, the two-sided book design, while very cool, does not allow the book to sit flat unless the flaps go in order, so it does require some management at cleanup time. During reading, the order does not really matter though.

Final verdict: NAME YOUR COLORS (AND CRITTERS, TOO!) is an engaging look at colors and bugs that toddlers are sure to enjoy!
