THE BIG DAY is a children’s picture book about a human attending the wedding celebration of two giant men. And I mean giant as in the fantastical creatures, not just a comment on their size. Told in a nice rhyme scheme, this book explores the lead up to and wedding of these men all through the eyes of one of their guests.
What I Loved:
The colors and artwork in this book are stunning and perfectly capture the magical feeling. Characters and items are distinctive and hold their own place in the story. I was just as enraptured in the winding colors and funny drawings as I was in the story. The art was also the place where jokes hid, like “with bells on” and “without bells on” on the RSVP card.
The message of this book is poignant. It’s something that readers may forget about at times and it is something that bears repeating.
Even if you’re not a big fan of messages in your picture books, the book itself is just full of fun and whimsy. Its bright colors and engaging rhymes will hopefully enrapture any kids, and adults, that read the book.
THE BIG DAY is an adorable example of representation in children’s picture books. It isn’t treated like a big deal; the book just happens to be about the wedding of two men. The color and artwork perfectly suit the narrative style of the book and it’s wonderful to see. The rhymes were a lot of fun and creative.
What Left Me Wanting More:
The story was very simple, which suits picture books, but I wish there had been more scenes of the wedding. It felt like it should have been the main focus, but it didn't seem like it was. Other details seemed to take center stage.
Final Verdict:
THE BIG DAY is an adorable children’s book with art and colors that perfectly surround the beautiful narrative style.
