While the author never says anything bad about the owners’ care, it is hard as a reader not to have hard feelings about the neglectful care of the kitten each day. It serves as a good reminder that kittens make better indoor pets. The content, length, and word choice make this chapter book a good intermediate step towards longer chapter books.
Overall, this story was engaging and appropriate for chapter book readers. This series is great for pet lovers and introduces the idea of crowdfunding when you need to raise money to help those in need.

What I Liked: This was a charming story that showed the importance of taking care of your pets. Scarlett loves seeing Whiskers each day, but you do feel sorry for her since her owners do not seem to care about her. When she is injured, Scarlett will do anything to help her. Sadly so many animals lose their lives because their owners are not willing to take care of them. This book highlights that animals can cost a lot of money if something happens to them, so it is important not to take on a pet unless you are willing to take that on too. Scarlett's compassion saves Whiskers life and I love how they all come together to raise the money.
What Left Me Wanting More: I was not expecting to read from Whisker's perspective and it was upsetting when she was injured, however, it was an important part of the story and helped to show how easy it is for a little animal to get injured when they are left to their own devices.
Final Verdict: I think this book would be great for children who are asking about getting a pet. It will encourage them to think about the expense and the importance of looking after them. They are a huge responsibility, but also living creatures who deserve care and compassion. I would definitely recommend this book.
