DON'T DO IT, DOUG is a silly picture book about impulse control. Doug the hamster is always getting himself into trouble - he shakes soda cans, pushes buttons that specifically say not to, and even yodels when there is risk of an avalanche. Luckily, his friend helps him to get that energy out in other ways, so that Doug is able to control his impulses - at least, until he finds a stick and sees a sleeping bear...

What I loved: This is a book that is sure to make young children giggle. They will love seeing Doug do everything he is not supposed to do and getting into lots of trouble. The consequences for these actions are readily apparent in every scene - so Doug feels the trouble he is making. Ultimately, the story has a lesson about getting that adrenaline in other, safer ways so that controlling impulses around dangerous things will be easier.

The illustrations are bright and colorful. They help to really tell the story along with the text, showing the trouble Doug is finding and the consequences of those actions on each page. The adorable images of Doug are sure to charm young readers and create plenty of laughs at his trouble along the way.

Final verdict: DON'T DO IT, DOUG is a cute, silly picture book about impulse control that will appeal to young readers. This is great for preschoolers and young elementary schoolers who can relate to wanting to do things you are not supposed to do (and facing the consequences)!

Full of energy and curiosity, Doug the hamster can't help pushing every button, pulling levers, and testing the limits of rules. The sign says not to shout, but, how bad could the results really be? Doug is going to find out, and the other animals are tired of being caught up in the chaos. With a little nudge, they try to turn Doug's enthusiasm in positive directions, and just maybe this hamster will finally learn to keep his paws to himself (most of the time).

The cute, minimalist art style supports the drama and lots of laugh. As Doug finds an outlet for his impulses in more controlled, thrill seeking adventures, it's good of his friend the beetle to stick with him for the wild ride (through avalanches, skydiving, aggressive massages, and all the rest). At the end of the day, although Doug still has an itch for poking the bear (quite literally), this story explores the consequences of being impulsive and how keeping busy with physical activities or productive tasks can help redirect otherwise distracting energy.

Doug has a habit of doing things he shouldn't. He is always getting into trouble even when he is warned not to do it. But when he goes too far, will he finally learn his lesson?
What I liked: Doug is funny and the outcomes to his actions will certainly entertain kids. Some kids do have impulse control issues so this could be a good way of showing them that actions have consequences while entertaining them.
What I Wanted More of: I would have liked a little more on Doug's turnaround and his reactions, but overall it was a fun read.
Final Verdict: This is a fun read that will have kids laughing, while learning at the same time. I would definitely recommend it.
