DON'T DO IT, DOUG is a silly picture book about impulse control. Doug the hamster is always getting himself into trouble - he shakes soda cans, pushes buttons that specifically say not to, and even yodels when there is risk of an avalanche. Luckily, his friend helps him to get that energy out in other ways, so that Doug is able to control his impulses - at least, until he finds a stick and sees a sleeping bear...
What I loved: This is a book that is sure to make young children giggle. They will love seeing Doug do everything he is not supposed to do and getting into lots of trouble. The consequences for these actions are readily apparent in every scene - so Doug feels the trouble he is making. Ultimately, the story has a lesson about getting that adrenaline in other, safer ways so that controlling impulses around dangerous things will be easier.
The illustrations are bright and colorful. They help to really tell the story along with the text, showing the trouble Doug is finding and the consequences of those actions on each page. The adorable images of Doug are sure to charm young readers and create plenty of laughs at his trouble along the way.
Final verdict: DON'T DO IT, DOUG is a cute, silly picture book about impulse control that will appeal to young readers. This is great for preschoolers and young elementary schoolers who can relate to wanting to do things you are not supposed to do (and facing the consequences)!
