Unicornia: The Frozen Palace

Unicornia: The Frozen Palace occurs as Claudia is going on a school trip to The Frozen Panace, which is made of ice. There are penguins everywhere, you can fly with unicorns made of ice, and this seems to be the most magical place inside of Unicornia. Unfortunately, Claudia and her friends stray from the group and find themselves lost. Will they be able to get out of the palace before they cause too much trouble?

What I Liked: Unicornia: The Frozen Palace has a fun balance of text and images that help to tell the story. The illustrations are all in shades of blue, which is consistent with other books in this universe, in which the inner colors match the outside cover. The color choice works perfectly for this book, as it takes place in The Frozen Palace, where everything is made of ice, so the blue shades do a great job of bringing each of the imaginative rooms to life. There are portions in this book where lists are important, and these are incorporated in intriguing manners, as they are in bubbles, so as not to disrupt the text. The various situations that Claudia and her friends found themselves in were funny, and while they might ignite a bit of fear, they were resolved promptly.

Final Verdict: Unicornia: The Frozen Palace is a book that continues the fun adventures that we’ve been on with Claudia, and adds to the wonder that is the place that they live in. This book is perfect for children ages 5 and up who are ready to try their first chapter book, as the chapters are short and easy to get through. This book is full of wonder and will spark the imaginations of young readers as they explore the rooms in the Frozen Palace and think about how the characters will get back to their friends.
