This book by Dr. Seuss is one of those classic holiday stories that a lot of people recognize, even if they have only seen the movie versions. It was one of those books I read before the movies and loved it! The rhythm and rhyming style made it easy to read out loud, and the kids I read it to also stayed really interested the whole time.

The story follows The Grinch, who lives on a mountain above the town of Whoville. He cannot stand the Whos and especially hates the way they celebrate Christmas every year. Because of that, he comes up with a plan to sneak into the town and steal everything connected to the holiday, including the presents, decorations, and food. He believes that if he takes all of it, Christmas simply will not happen.

Something interesting I noticed while reading is that the book itself is a little different from what people might expect if they only know the famous TV special. In the original book, there are no songs like “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” Instead, the rhyming writing style creates its own kind of rhythm, which makes the story fun to read out loud. The illustrations are also simple but expressive, and they help bring the characters and Whoville to life.

At its core, the story is really about someone realizing they were wrong and changing for the better. When the Grinch sees that Christmas still happens even after he steals everything, he finally understands that the holiday means more than just gifts and decorations. It is a simple message, but it is one that still works really well, especially when sharing the story with kids.
